A home owner has been hit by a flooding problem at her house which she believes is caused by drainage issues on council land.

Sonia Leeson lives at the back of Boz Park in Whitefield, a green space owned by the council.

The 47-year-old fell in love with the property after seeing it and bought it in February last year.

She said: “I was so excited when I bought the house, it’s lovely. “

But the flooding first began after a period of heavy rain in December.

She believes the problem is caused by insufficient drainage on the park.

Her house is situated at the bottom of an incline and she said the water runs off the council land and into her property.

She also has discovered rising damp as a result of the flooding, which has led her to believe that this issue may have been happening before she bought the house.

After removing the fitted flooring in her kitchen, she discovered the base flooring had rotted due to water damage, which required a full replacement, costing her approximately £300.

She has also paid around £1,400 to have flood defence systems installed around the outside of her home.

After contacting her local councillor, Cllr Lucy Smith, about the issue and having a meeting with her, she hoped the option of installing drainage systems would be discussed formally with the council.

When contacted about the problem, Cllr Smith said: “I can confirm I was contacted by a resident on Wyre Close about flooding in the garden- I did raise it through the casework system.

“I informed the resident that their insurance company would be able to investigate any liability but that I would raise the potential of flooding in plans for improvement to the park, which is an ongoing project for Besses councillors.

“I have apologised to the resident if they felt I would be raising the issue in a formal meeting as they believed and offered to do so on their behave if requested.

“As a Besses councillor I am committed to driving through more improvements for the park as a whole”

In response to Cllr Smith’s enquiry, the council said: “Unfortunately, due to prolonged and heavy periods of recent rainfall, surface water run off will occur from fields - this isn't something the council can control.

“The site doesn't have any drainage or issues which will be causing any floods, it is simply the volume of rainfall which has occurred in recent weeks."
